It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! Though we celebrate Hispanic heritage throughout the year, this month provides a reminder to slow down to explore and appreciate the many dimensions of Hispanic culture, history, and identity in more depth.
Dublin students and faculty draw on Hispanic culture and history to coordinate fun activities and provide enriching experiences for their peers throughout the month. To kick the month off, students and faculty came together last weekend to feel the rhythms of latin dance, learning the basics of Cumbia, Bachata, and Salsa in step with their friends and teachers.
In the Spanish classroom, students use their language skills to explore the richness of Hispanic culture through a variety of assignments and classroom activities. In Spanish 4, for example, Meg Richards welcomed Shandys M. ‘25 to present about her Dominican heritage. This year, the emphasis is on learning from members of the school community who are of Hispanic descent. Dublin School is very fortunate to have a strong group of Hispanic students to lead these efforts, and (relative to our size) a large number of faculty members who are from, have lived in, or descended from Latin America to share about their experiences as Hispanic Americans.
In addition to last weekend’s dance lessons, there are several more enrichment experiences to look forward to. Anais L.V. ‘26, who organized those dance lessons, shared the schedule of planned events that will round out the month.
“We have a couple different things planned to contribute to celebrating Hispanic Heritage month on campus… The kitchen staff, along with Mr. Ortiz and Ms. Richards are planning a "mexican" inspired meal to be served during dinner on Monday, October 7th. We also have two presentations planned for the month. The first being on Friday September 27th where Shandys and Yazmin will be talking about the culture and traditions of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The second, Mr. Villamill, Mr. Ortiz, Ms. Munoz, Ms. Molina, and Ms. Richards will be presenting on their experiences of living and being from different countries and the cultures of each country. Lastly, SOCA (Student of Color Association) is throwing a party Saturday October 5th. We will have Spanish food from different countries and music!”
