Double-Clicking on J-Term

Last week we introduced a smattering of J-Term courses. This week, all the rest!

Building Community & Connections:

Mr. Brown and Ms. Stewart’s crew have been all around the Monadnock Region volunteering their time for a variety of community causes. They’ve prepared community dinners, spent the afternoon with retirees at RiverMead, joined elementary schoolers at recess, and even lent a hand to Dublin’s own Advancement Office.

JFK Assassination Theories:

Mr. Villamil, Ms. Dumaine, and a full roundtable of curious students have been wading through the details surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Examining primary source documents from the Warren Commission alongside artistic and secondary accounts of the events of November 11th, 1963, they are coming to their own opinions on the case, all while learning a great deal about the political landscape (and intrigues) of the 1960s.

Comics / Zine Making:

Originating on the cultural fringe, zines are self-published booklets that creators have long used to express themselves through writing and illustration. In this year’s Zine Making J-Term, students have sought to shed light on New Hampshire architecture, educate readers on the invasive menace of green crabs, and much more.

Raku Pottery:

Raku is a ceramic style that involves introducing hot ware plucked from the kiln into a nest of combustible organic materials - newspaper scraps, sawdust, horsehair, etc.. Magic occurs therein. In the course, students are introduced to this ancient Japanese style, producing original works.

Quilting:

Offered each year since the inaugural J-Term at Dublin School, Quilting is the type of course where the bell rings and students remain in the classroom. By the close of this two-week mini-term, students will have created their own quilt, overseeing the entire process, from pattern selection to the final stitches.

Song Writing:

Songwriting and poetry is a J-Term where students interested in how music and poetry combine to create songs will collaborate. Students have been working in small groups to develop original compositions, learning about song form and structure, melody composition, lyric writing, and basic chord progressions along the way.

The Joy of Baking:

This baking class traverses the world in sweet treats. Working out of the DubHub in downtown Dublin, students will make a recipe from start to finish each class session, with results to take home every day. We will practice and gain confidence with the skills and techniques necessary for successful baking and creation: following recipes, utensils and measurements, attention to detail, kitchen safety, and working collaboratively with fellow bakers. In the heart of winter, what could be better than appreciating The Joy of Baking together?

The Past, Present, & Future of VR:

A crash course on the general usage of virtual reality in the modern world where students learn about its past, current practical usages, and outlook for the future. Using the school’s fleet of Meta Quest 3s, students have explored VR capabilities while theorizing on the future of this technology.
