Can an AI be my friend?

Can an AI be my friend?

Dear families,

Did you know that 3 out of 4 teens have turned to AI companionship this year?

This week in Technology Ethics we talked about belonging and relationships. Through a discussion, we recognized that belonging appears on Maslow's hierarchy of needs between survival and self-actualization. That it is what can grow us beyond just surviving into thriving.

Students defined belonging as "feeling safe, comfortable, supported and free to share their real selves."

Then we discussed AI companions. Students listened and watched these two links: podcast and news video. If you watch too, ask your students what they think about it.

Students are working this week on writing letters to themselves in the future transition to college or after college about how to work on the feeling of loneliness without using AI to fill the gap. I am looking forward to learning their advice this weekend when reading their letters.

Ask your students if they are willing to share what they wrote to their future selves.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone who can come to family weekend!
