This year’s winter production opens Thursday, February 23 at 7pm and runs Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25 at 7pm and Sunday, February 26th at 2pm.
“Once on this Island,” the Tony nominated and Olivier award-winning musical, first appeared on Broadway in 1990 and is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy. Part-Romeo and Juliet, part- The Little Mermaid, this musical, set on a fictional island in the Caribbean, is as much about the value of storytelling as it is about star-crossed lovers from two different worlds. Stories interweave, linked by the theme that what we imagine to be possible can indeed help us transcend the status quo. In celebration of the oral tradition, song and dance take center stage and become the vehicle through which a group of storytellers present a magical journey of “one small girl” with the will to defy the social norms of her island home in order to inspire change for later generations, even if her own fate is destined to be tragic.
