Mathematics Department Chair
B.A. Bowdoin College
I grew up in Duxbury, MA with my older sister, mom, and dad. My town gave me the wonderful opportunities of learning to sail, working on an oyster farm, and attending great public schools. I was also blessed to attend Bowdoin College, where I was challenged to think critically about my personal beliefs. As I begin my next endeavor at Dublin, I hope to continue learning through hearing the perspectives of others and questioning my own views.
What book has made you think the most? It's hard to say, but I just finished reading This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz, which was seriously thought provoking. It also made me rush to get Diaz's novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
How would your friends describe you in three words? Kind, competitive, helpful.
What is your favorite course you have taken in high school or college? In my junior year of college, I took a course called Mindfulness in Education, which impacted my life more than any other class I've taken. We studied different approaches to implementing mindfulness practices in classrooms but also learned how to practice mindfulness. This seems like such a simple thing, but most people in my class, including myself had never been taught how to do anything mindfully. It is actually not that complicated but is certainly a skill that takes practice. This was also probably the only course that ever lowered my level of stress, likely because we meditated before every class and were required to do mindfulness practices of our choosing outside of class.
I am most happy when... I am playing ultimate...or just throwing a disc. There are a lot of things that make me happy, but playing ultimate has the power to lift my spirits under any circumstance.
What is your favorite outdoor activity? Growing up, my favorite outdoor activity was definitely fishing. During the summer, I could fish for hours every day and never worry about it getting old. This past winter, I rekindled my love for downhill skiing, which I hope to find time for this coming winter.
I know Dublin has incredible outdoor opportunities, so I'm excited to see how this answer expands for me next year!
