A short-handed Dublin squad faced off against a well-coached and skilled team from Tilton School on Saturday. Down three starters (including goalie Sofia Torvinen (Oulu, Finland)), defensive stalwart McLaren Bristol (Greensboro, NC) volunteered to play goalie. This left only two starters on the backline to start the game. Things went from bad to worse when standout defender Tatiyana Dunkers (Newark, NJ) was injured a couple of minutes into the game. A number of mid-fielders and forwards substituted down low, reducing our ability to move the ball up efficiently. As a result, Tilton dominated play across the field and outshot Dublin by a large number.
Girls battled gamely, but the loss of four starters was too much to overcome. Bristol made a large number of quality saves and battled bravely in her first-ever start in goal. Inexperience in playing angles, however, led to a number of Tilton goals. Dublin had several good chances, including a shot that hit the post flush behind the Tilton goalie. Fatigue and lack of depth prevented the kind of sustained scoring chances that had been the hallmark of the team up until now.
