The Nordic Junior Nationals brings together the best skiers in the US to compete over eight days in March. Calvin Bates and Lilly Bates will be representing Dublin School and our local ski club Dublin XC. They join a New England team of 21 boys and 21 girls that have been rated as the best skiers in New England.
Calvin qualified as a U20 and Lilly as a U16. Calvin is one of only two high school skiers from New England to qualify in this class as the U20 class is typically dominated by college skiers. This is Calvin's third time qualifying for Junior Nationals. Last year, racing in the U18 division, Calvin placed 6th in the U18 Sprint Race (despite fighting illness), thereby earning All-American status. This is Lilly's first trip to Junior Nationals. She was the 6th ranked racer in New England in the U16 division.
Junior Nationals will take place on the 1980 Olympics trails at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, NY March 3-11th. Skiers will race as individuals but there is also a team competition. There are three individual events and one team relay. The event includes ten teams from the Rocky Mountain, Far West, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, High Plains, Mid West, Intermountain, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and New England. Skiers finishing in the top ten in each event earn All-American honors.
