Last Saturday we headed to Bretton Woods with a large group from our team to compete in a five kilometer classic technique race under the looming presence of Mount Washington. The Dublin skiers were competing for spots in the New England High School Championships and the New England Under 16 Championships, two wonderful events put on by the New England Nordic Skiing Association (NENSA). The New Hampshire Nordic Coaches Association (NHNCA) is in charge of hosting two races to pick teams for these wonderful events.
Skiers were seeded by their coaches and started in waves of five to race against the clock. The waves are fun because you get to see where you match up against kids of the same rank on their respective teams. For instance, our number three skier gets to start with the number 3 skiers from all of the other private and public schools in the state. Interestingly, NH's qualifiers are the largest ski high school races in the country with almost 900 skiers in attendance!
The NHNCA runs an A race and a B race for less experienced skiers. We had some great results overall in the A race with Lilly finishing 7th and Viivi finishing 21st. Tatum had to miss the first race but will race in the second race. Fiona finished 95th and Sita finished 111th. For the boys, Calvin finished 2nd, George Henry 13th, Ryan 42nd, Hyelom 61st, Jared 93rd, Matthew 103rd, William 108th, and Yates 146th.
In the B races Brianna was our top girl finisher in 24th and Geoffrey our top by in 45th. As a team, the Dublin boys finished 5th and the girls finished 7th. This Saturday we are heading to Whitefield for the second race, this one a skate race. Great job team!
