We arrived at camp in Craftsbury, VT yesterday and got right to work (if you can call it that!). We have fourteen athletes and three coaches with our local ski club Kathy Maddock joining us. Mrs. Bates is our team coordinator and handles all of the logistics for us. Some of our parents sent us some tasty treats to help us fuel during our post workout glycogen windows.
After unpacking in the Craftsbury Outdoor Center's dormitories we headed out for some dynamic stretching and a run on the Center's sweet single track. We ran about 10km on a warm and sunny afternoon.
Some skiers wanted a little more work (or at least that is what I told them) so we jogged out to the biathlon range for some hill walking in the afternoon light.
We ended the afternoon with a pick-up soccer game. We were psyched when the Craftsbury junior team joined us for some spirited play. They have a great ski program with some very nice, and fast, kids. After showering we headed to the awesome dining hall for an incredible meal of salmon with pomegranate, brussels sprouts, scalloped potatoes, salad bar, beet cakes and chocolate mouse. Delicious! After quick naps we met in the Center's great Rogue Gym for 90 minutes of stretching and strength circuits. Our athletes love the gym and found many ways to amuse themselves.
The theme of the day was definitely laughter and the girls told me that they did not need to do any core work since their stomachs hurt so much from laughing. Coaches Maddock and Weber arrived at 9pm and we had a quick team meeting before hitting the hay. Today we will have a big breakfast before heading out for two roller skiing sessions.
