Dublin's 2015 Sailing Team has 20 students, eight of whom until this week had never been in a sailboat. In the first week we always do lots of housekeeping, learn how to find our way to the lake and around the boats, and safety-oriented drills. The very first time out everyone capsizes and rights a boat to become familiar with how to efficiently recover from a spill.
Below are photos taken this week by 9th-graders Irena Clements and Theresa Barth. The Sailors in the photos are involved in a "top-to-bottom" race where, on the coach's whistle, teams have to capsize their boat, both swim to the top of the mast, then return and right the boat. The first team off sailing again 'wins' the race.
