Occasional musings from Head of School Brad Bates

Bagels with Brad!

A couple of years ago our alumni office started a new tradition called “Bagels with Brad.” We invite young alumni to return to campus during their interminable college vacations to meet with me and visit J-Term classes. I am guessing that the free bagels were more enticing than being invited to spend time with me, but I was happy to have a captive audience with these outstanding alumni for a bit! I was so proud to hear how well they had launched into college and how they are using their Dublin School skills to navigate the complexities of college life. They indicated they were well-prepared for their classes, felt highly comfortable communicating with their professors, and enjoyed joining clubs, choirs, teams, and orchestras.

While they said they enjoyed their new-found free time, they also missed the pace and structure of their Dublin lives. They are majoring in fields like biochemistry, literature, environmental science, and psychology. One of our alumni has just been accepted into Harvard Law School!

So much of what we do at Dublin involves planting seeds during these critical phases of a young person’s growth. It is rewarding to see our alumni grow and thrive so soon after the sowing. Great credit goes to their incredible families and the excellent institutions they are now attending. Seeing their enthusiasm for their colleges makes me appreciate the often unseen work of our highly experienced college counselor, Holly Macy. Holly puts “fit” above all else while building college lists with her students.

I hope more young alumni will visit in the future. If not for “Brad,” then definitely for the free bagels…
