Learning Skills Program Overview

Embracing Dublin School's mission of respecting the individual learning style and potential of all of our students, our academic support programs are designed to serve the varied academic needs of individual learners. There are additional fees for the Learning Skills Program tutorials and Evening Assisted Study.

Learning Skills Program Tutorials

The Learning Skills Program (LSP) tutorials provide academic support, in a one-on-one setting, for students with a range of learning challenges, including mild to moderate learning disabilities, attentional issues, and the need for additional academic instruction. However, this is not a remedial program and is not suitable for students who have severe behavioral, emotional, or learning issues. Approximately thirty percent of Dublin's students meet 1:1 with experienced LSP tutors in regularly scheduled daytime classes. Tutorials are scheduled to meet an average of three or five days per week, depending upon student needs. Students have the opportunity to identify their own learning styles and challenges, and they set goals for improving their academic readiness. Tutorial instruction is individualized and builds upon student strengths, while teaching new strategies to support areas of academic difficulty. Students with documented academic needs, such as those associated with learning disabilities or attentional issues, may avail themselves of appropriate accommodations, such as extended time for testing or computer use for writing. Regular communication between Dublin's LSP tutors and the classroom teachers reinforces the effectiveness of the program. Tutorial sessions provide instruction and opportunities for further practice in study skills, reading, writing, mathematics, and specific course content. Students learn strategies for enhancing study skills, including those for more effective organization, time management, communication, and concentration. They are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for utilizing methods that will be more efficient for them, while building self-advocacy skills that will be useful in secondary school and beyond. The ultimate goal of the Learning Skills Program is to foster Dublin School students as confident, curious, and independent learners. LSP placement is typically determined at the time of acceptance to the school, although students may join the program at a later time should the need arise. LSP tutorial enrollment is by school year and spaces are limited.

Evening Assisted Study

Homework production and study skills practice are the focus of the Evening Assisted Study (EAS) program. Twice weekly from 7-9 pm, small groups of up to five students meet with a Learning Skills Program tutor. Individual guidance in study skills and some review of course content are provided in the quiet, structured setting. Students find the sessions supportive and beneficial to their study habits, and ultimately to their overall academic performance. Enrollment in the program is by trimester and is open to any Dublin School student, although space is limited.
