How does anyone describe or determine the real strengths of a School?
Mottos, Mission and Vision Statements are crafted for that purpose. Dublin School’s motto, “Truth and Courage” is the foundation and the two statements you have read expand on those two expectations.
All well and good. But the crucial test of a school is its students’ growth to matriculation.
Growth, that is, in intellectual habits, responsibility, concern for those in their community, and the total joy of learning. -- learning to think, to speak, to act, to engage in sports and to know one’s self.
That growth was wonderfully shown this year in the last week of May and graduation day, May 31. Students, Faculty, Staff and Trustees marched, 200 strong, from the Town center to the cemetery and back, participating in the Memorial Day ceremonies. On Friday evening, awards were made to students and faculty in recognition of so many achievements and gifts of their talents. Graduation Day was a medley of wisdom, pathos and humor. Dean of Students, John Marquis’ invocation set the tone; Richard Fox spoke of the many achievements during the year; David Fountain ‘73 gave an historic and challenging address; and Eric Nemitz’ good bye to the Seniors cited his own malpractices and lessons from his college years.
Three Seniors, James, Jessica and William, recited, chapter and verse, why Dublin School will always guide their lives. Individual and group support; pranks, parental admonishment and admiration, their discovery of mutual dependence and support --- and the excitement of `college ahead of them. (All 39 are headed for colleges and universities world wide.)
One senior’s parent said to me, “My son has grown so much, so fast, in so many ways while at Dublin ---- it’s quite remarkable.”
I felt privileged to be included this year in the company of Dublin’s students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni/ae, administration, trustees and friends of this fine School.
