Dublin School
Learning Skills Program
Zak Stahl and Andrew Porter Tutorial

The Learning Skills Program is designed for students accepted to Dublin School who may be diagnosed with a mild to moderate learning difference, or for whom success depends on additional one-on-one instruction with a learning specialist. Direct instruction is provided to students in learning strategies, reading and writing processes, mathematics skills, critical thinking, research, organization, time management and general study skills. In addition, students are taught to understand their own learning styles and self advocate for appropriate accommodations as necessary.

Applicants to Dublin School who may have previous educational plans are requested to contact the Learning Skills Program Director for information, and an assessment of the appropriate level of support needed. We arrange accommodations for students that are supported by the student's learning profile as described by professional education testing, an IEP or 504 plan. The Learning Skills Program is not suitable for students with severe behavioral, emotional or educational issues. We are not a remedial program; we support, accommodate and provide minor modifications within the greater Dublin School curriculum. Our tutoring faculty are education generalists with a wide range of experience and are available for three and five day tutorials. However, none of our current tutors hold state certification in special education. Our students move through the program after learning the skills and strategies which relate to their particular learning styles, and which will make them better students overall.

Evening Assisted Study

This is an extra program in which up to four students meet with a Learning Skills tutor for two hours twice per week, with the focus being on homework production. The environment is quiet and structured, with most students in separate rooms. The tutor circulates among the students, provides guidance in study skills, cues to help maintain focus, and gives some direct instruction, as appropriate. Students are expected to bring and utilize their daily planners and appropriate study materials. Most students find the sessions to be supportive and beneficial to their study habits, and ultimately to their overall academic performance.
