Scott Olsen 07 Maple Sugaring

Dublin School has about 230 acres of land on the Lower Campus. In the early years of the School, trails were made as well as a ski hill and ski jump. Several cabins were also dotted around the property. Much of this has been out of use for twenty to thirty years and trails have closed in, ski hill abandoned and cabins collapsed to the earth. Some eight years ago we started to get back to the woods. The first project was to mark our boundary line. The next step was clearing and widening the basic trails that are closest to the campus. Lastly we mapped out a manageable trail system that now includes some four miles of beautiful trails. Safety and accessibility were main concerns. Much of this work was done by our Saturday work gang which really gave some meaningfulness to that Dublin School tradition. Machinery was hired through donations and bridges were built. Our last phase on trail establishment is to put a couple of inches of wood chips over the whole trail. We use these trails for walking, sports teams (both cross country running and cross country skiing), snowshoeing and mountain biking. We would like to add some cabins and tent platforms to enable students to camp out in our woods. We have maple sugaring in the area and we are in the process of establishing several outdoor classrooms. The trails are all marked with trail maps at all of the intersections. These trails are open to the town of Dublin and the surrounding area for recreational use.
