When I was seven years old, I skied into a tree and broke my femur. In one early winter afternoon, I was taken away from the fun of being a child, I was taken away from my friends, and I was confined to a hospital bed for twelve weeks. With crushed spirit, I'd look from my hospital window to see all of my friends skiing on our local rope tow hill every day after school. While I was cheated out of a New England winter, I also discovered my passion for life and I made a vow to the Almighty that if I ever got out of that hospital bed, I would live in the outdoors for the rest of my life and I would never come in.

I finally left the hospital, my leg healed and for the rest of my childhood, I lived on our home town rope tow from early December until late March. Whenever it snowed, my dad would cancel his appointments, load the station wagon, pull me out of school and head for Vermont. Each evening, my face would fall into my dinner plate from exhaustion and every winter day was, and continues to be, the best day of my life.

While I was initially drawn to Dublin because of my great appreciation for winter and outdoor sports, I trusted my instinct and came to Dublin because I believe that Dublin will allow me to be the educator and coach that I was always meant to be. At Dublin we mentor our students in every aspect of their daily lives. We eat meals together. We share ideas and dreams in daily morning meetings as a community. We interact between classes. We do manual labor together and while we celebrate our successes, we also learn from our failed attempts. At Dublin, we build relationships that create the critical bond that allows the true learning process to begin. Dublin is the special place that I chose to inspire students to become passionate and curious lifelong learners.

What book has made you think the most?: "How the Racer's Ski", this groundbreaking 1972 work written by Warren Witherall challenged the tenants of conventional "wisdom" and inspired me to approach problems by always looking at the causes rather than the symptoms.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?: I'd use all of my superpowers to put every tobacco grower, distributor and marketer out of business…forever!

If your life had a theme song, what would it be?: "Up on the Roof" by Carole King and Gerry Goffin "On the roof's the only place I know Where you just have to wish to make it so" This song reflects my need to get away, be outside and to dream.

What teacher has had the most impact on you? How were they special?: It is impossible to give this credit to just one teacher.

  • Richard L. Ring, my first road cycling coach and my mentor for 37 years instilled in me the value that preparation and desire trumps talent.
  • Sister Charles Francis, (Sisters of St. Joseph) my 12th grade mathematics and physics teacher who always made me accountable.
  • Erle Morse, my Alpine skiing coach who helped me to achieve results beyond my childhood dreams.
  • John Colozzi, the empathetic chalk-talk history professor who reached me through pictures and words.
  • My wife Shelly and my children, Christopher and Kelly, who guided me to appreciate the most important things in life.
  • And finally, to all of my students, most of whom are also my best teachers.

How would your friends describe you in 3 words?: Persistent, Storyteller, Active

You are hosting a dinner party and must invite 3 famous people. Who would you choose and why?: Ken Burns, to listen to his stories Petter Northug, for taking Nordic ski racing to a new level Burt Bacharach to play the piano.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?: Actually, I'd like to get hired for that role.
