Dean of Students

B.A. Carleton College

I grew up on the coast of Maine, in the town of Cape Elizabeth. Despite a love for mountains and the ocean, I spent my college years in the corn fields of southern Minnesota. Fortunately, I did manage to break up the flatness with numerous trips to some national parks out west, as well as a semester abroad in Tanzania.

I have always enjoyed the sense of community and the pace of small town living, which made the Monadnock region an ideal location for my return to New England after college. I spent my first two years in this region as an environmental educator at Boston University’s Sargent Center in the neighboring town of Peterborough. In the spring of 2004, I was lucky enough to hear about a school up in Dublin that was looking for a science teacher who could also coordinate the student rock band. I took it as a sign and applied. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Every day continues to bring new challenges and rewards.

Outside of Dublin, I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of adventures, including a 50-day canoe trip in northern Quebec and a two-month stint as a crew member on a sailboat traveling to Newfoundland and Labrador. I have also spent a number of summers leading high school student volunteer trail crews in a variety of state and national parks throughout the country.

I still cling to the hope of one day becoming an astronaut. I'm just waiting for NASA to design a helmet that can fit my head.

What book has made you think the most?: The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?: I would love to be instantly fluent in any language I encounter. I also think I would enjoy flight. I'm not sure how much fear the "Flying Linguist" would strike in the hearts of supervillains, though.

If your life had a theme song, what would it be?: California (Pt. II) by Mason Jennings

What teacher has had the most impact on you? How were they special?: Sue Richman, my high school Biology and Marine Biology teacher. She was challenging, but inspiring. She also modeled the importance of curiosity, hard work, and maintaining an active lifestyle. She often shared pictures and examples from her many wilderness adventures. She once was attacked by a grizzly bear and lived to tell the tale!

How would your friends describe you in 3 words?: curious, analytical, sentimental

You are hosting a dinner party and must invite 3 famous people. Who would you choose and why?: Ansel Adams - Any person who spent that much time out in the woods must have at least a few great stories to tell.
Joshua Chamberlain - I've always thought of him as a legend. As a professor turned officer in the Civil War (and later Governor of Maine), he has always struck me as an interesting and incredibly adaptable leader. I would be curious to hear his take on the current state of things.
Brandi Carlile - Besides me needing at least one guest who is not an elderly man covered in facial hair, I think she would add a real spark to the table. I figure she could do a little impromptu singing during any lulls in the conversation. Who knows, maybe Ansel and Joshua would join in and we could do some good ol' four-part harmonies.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?: Ryan Gosling or Aaron Eckhart
