After growing up on the Monterey Peninsula of California, I decided to give the east coast a try. I spent four years at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where I majored in American Studies, met my husband and realized that I'm a New Englander at heart. A position teaching history, coaching and living as a dorm parent at my high school alma mater, Stevenson, drew me back to California for several years, in the middle of which I took a year to earn my master's degree at Dartmouth College. Living in Hanover further solidified my love for the seasons, New Hampshire hiking trails and the Yankee way of life. It wasn't until 2009 that we made the move back to the Granite State and landed here at Dublin. I now live on campus with my husband Ron, my son, Will and our lovable, if not brilliant, yellow labs.
What book has made you think the most?: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?: Time travel---but only to the past, and just to observe. It would be incredible to be able to experience and record key historic events and then share them with my students. Totally, nerdy, I know, but nerdy in an awesome way.
Being able to teleport myself anywhere would be pretty sweet too.
If your life had a theme song, what would it be?: hmmm......
What teacher has had the most impact on you? How were they special?: Professor Charles Bassett, who helped found the American Studies Program at Colby College, had a profound impact on me, both personally and professionally. Charlie had the unique ability to make each one of his students, colleagues and friends feel completely valued. He was smart, kind, funny, and a great story teller. I miss him deeply and strive in my own teaching to challenge and support my students the way that Charlie did.
How would your friends describe you in 3 words?: I've never been able to answer this one....
You are hosting a dinner party and must invite 3 famous people. Who would you choose and why?: 3 Famous people, dead or alive?
I think that Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt and Leonardo DaVinci would provide for lively and historically rich conversation. But, I'd need to have the dinner catered--living on boarding school campuses has done little to help develop my culinary skills.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?: Claire Danes--I've always respected her as an actor.
