Calvin and I had been reading about the Climb to the Castle race up Whiteface Mountain in New York for the last couple of years and decided to give it a try this fall. Five miles up a 5000 footer in the Adirondacks sounded a little crazy, but what a great way to jump start fall training. We were sorry that we scared away the US Ski Team this year but it was awesome having the chance to line up against the US Biathlon Team and some other elite athletes.

They just paved the road, which made it great for the climb.

Due to my fragile ego I put Calvin on our slow skate skis while I raced on our pair of super fast classic skis--I think this is part of my mid-life crisis. (I bought a pair of fast Italian wheels like any good man experiencing a mid-life crisis.) We had a great time and it was pretty incredible to hit the finish line and realize you are at the summit of a large mountain.

I drafted off of these young guys all the way to the summit!

Now that we have checked it out we want to bring more Dublin School Endurance Team athletes to the event next year.
