We were double booked for both a major cross-country running race and a mountain bike race on the same day in late October. We have been hosting these races on our lower trail network while we develop our upper trails at the Dublin School Nordic Center. But we cannot host them on the same course on the same day. Athletic Director Brooks Johnson asked if we could hold the mountain bike race at the Nordic Center. My first response was “no way!” It would take days for our grounds crew to prepare the necessary trails for a race. Then, I realized that my reaction was not in the spirit of the “Dublin way”. “Of course we can,” I said as I recovered my senses and took a big sip from an ice cold can of Moxie.
So last week my son and I went out and designed a single track following the International Mountain Biking Association guidelines for trails and cut the big stuff out of the way. Then, on Saturday, Mr. Cox’s Work Gang began clearing, clipping and raking the trails. That afternoon the entire Mountain Biking team and their coaches spent three hours with me finishing the job. How many heads of school get to spend an afternoon with an awesome bunch of hard working, positive kids and enthusiastic coaches making trails and riding them with them? I am a lucky guy!
