The Man Who Has Many Answers

The Man Who Has Many Answers

One of our school's longstanding trustees, Patricia Fletcher, regularly sends me books of poetry from her personal library to share with our students in our own library. Pat worked for many years as the librarian for the American Alpine Club in New York City and also sends me beautiful books on mountaineering. This morning I read a poem by Mary Oliver, from her collection A Thousand Mornings, that struck a nerve. Sarah Doenmez, our Academic Dean, has been talking about the importance of asking deep and meaningful questions. I hope this poem makes you think!

The Man Who Has Many Answers

The man who has many answers
is often found

in the theaters of information

where he offers, graciously,

his deep findings.

While the man who has only questions,

to comfort himself, makes music.
