Wed. February 15th @ 8 AM -- NEPSAC Championships @ Sunapee
Newbury, NH (February 15, 2012) -- The Dublin School Wildcats alpine skiing race team competed in the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Championships this past Wednesday at Mount Sunapee. It was a full day of racing, beginning around 9:00am and concluding at 3:00pm, and included both slalom and giant slalom racing. The thirteen schools in attendance were allowed to choose their top five male and female athletes to represent their respective schools in each event. Furthermore, out of the five athletes, only the top three finishing times per each event would count towards their team's overall placement.
The first event of the day was GS, and representing the Wildcats were Katie Houde, Margaret Elliot, Riley Lawton, Amanda Bartlett, and Iva deMartelly on the girls' side; Tucker Wheeler, Lukas Barth, Danny Harrington, Owen Wood, and Daniel Mallory rounded out the boys' side. The girls did well overall, with the top three spots going to Katie Houde (16th of 56), Riley Lawton (30th of 56), and Margaret Elliot (36th of 56). This put the girls at 9th of 12 schools overall for GS. On the boys side in the top three spots were Tucker Wheeler (36th of 60), Danny Harrington (42nd of 60), and Lukas Barth (43rd of 60). This put the boys in 12th of 13 in GS.
After a brief intermission, racing resumed during the second half of the day with SL. There were a few small changes in the afternoon's lineup: Saioa Ochoa replaced Amanda Bartlett on the girls' side, and John Zimardo replaced Daniel Mallory on the boys' side. The boys improved much in overall placement despite some costly errors, taking 10th out of 13 in SL. Dublin's top three boys were Lukas Barth (29th of 60), Owen Wood (38th of 60), and Danny Harrington (44th of 60). The girls were able to take 8th in the slalom event out of 12 schools, with our top racers being Katie Houde (11th of 56), Riley Lawton (32nd of 56), and Iva deMartelly (36th of 56).
The combined GS and SL scores put the Dublin School girls at a respectable 7th place out of 12 schools, with Brewster, Thayer, and Lawrence taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The Dublin School boys took a combined placement of 12th out of 13 schools, with Rivers, Lawrence, and Thayer taking the top three spots.
The Wildcats will finish up their winter racing season on Wednesday, February 22nd, as they travel to Proctor Academy to compete in the 2012 Slalom Championships.
